Co-Director Hiring Announcement

Whippersnapper Gallery is excited to announce we are hiring a Director of Programming and an Executive Director. We are seeking emerging arts professionals who are prepared to lead the organization through a time of growth and transition.

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the organizational direction and administration including budgeting, bookkeeping, communication, fundraising, and facility maintenance. The Director of Programming is responsible for developing and overseeing the gallery's artistic programming, exhibitions, events, and artist support programs.

Both candidates should have a strong understanding of contemporary art and the particular concerns of emerging artists. While these positions have many responsibilities and require demonstration of skills in some areas, we are committed to keeping them entry-level positions for people at an early stage in their career. There is opportunity for training and job shadowing on aspects of the positions in which candidates may not have extensive experience.

Co-Executive Director

Whippersnapper Gallery is a non-profit artist-run centre in Toronto, committed to the underdog artist and the racialized, queer, disabled and working-class communities that we are a part of. 

Whippersnapper is seeking a Co-Executive Director to lead a dynamic organization that challenges the usual relationships artists have to galleries, as well as the relationships galleries usually have to their neighborhoods.

The Co-Executive Director will work collaboratively and on an equal decision-making basis with the Co- Director of Programming and will report to the Board of Directors. Responsibilities for this role include: 

  • Oversight and direction of all organization components including key organization relationships, property, finances, goodwill, images, health and safety 

  • Responsibility for overall annual budget and finances 

  • Working with the board to ensure that the organization complies with all legislation, government directives and standards

  • Leading grant writing direction and reporting on all organization grant programs 

  • General administration 

  • Public relations

Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership and arts administration experience

  • Experience creating and maintaining budgets and finances 

  • Experience in grant writing and reporting

  • Experienced in building relationships with youth, racialized, working class, and other underrepresented communities

  • Demonstrated success in grant writing 

  • Foster a positive culture and work environment that works collaboratively with staff and board

  • Communication and public relations skills

Job Status: Part-time, permanent

Hours per week: 12-15 hours per week standard

Salary range: $33.00 per hour

Working Conditions: This is a hybrid role requiring onsite and remote participation

Co-Director of Programming

Whippersnapper Gallery is a non-profit artist-run centre in Toronto, committed to the underdog artist and the racialized, queer, disabled and working-class communities that we are a part of. Whippersnapper is seeking a Co-Director of Programming to create innovative programming that catalyzes social transformation. 

The Co-Director of Programming will work collaboratively and on an equal decision-making basis with the Co-Executive Director and will report to the Board of Directors. Responsibilities for this role include: 

  • Artistic vision and overall curation, contracting, planning, implementation of Whippersnapper Gallery exhibitions, programming, and special projects 

  • Development and nurturing community partnerships to ensure programs are innovative, high quality, and responsive

  • Leading grant writing/documenting/evaluating/reporting on all programming grant programs to gain revenue, expand/enrich programming

  • Oversight over and support for exhibitions and ongoing planning of exhibitions, outreach and programming  

  • Creation or oversight of promotional material i.e., write-ups, posters, postcards, digital materials, social media dissemination 

  • Coordinating volunteers 

  • Communications planning and oversight 

Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skills in artistic leadership, artistic development, programming, and community engagement

  • Curatorial and exhibit experience

  • Experienced in building relationships with emerging and experienced artists from youth, racialized, working class, and other underrepresented communities

  • Demonstrated success in grant writing 

  • Identify and build on potentially beneficial community trends, initiatives, collaborations and partnerships; assess and act on opportunities when appropriate

  • Foster a positive culture and work environment that works collaboratively with staff and board

  • Communication skills including social media, print, digital and other platforms

Job Status: Part-time, permanent

Hours per week: 15-20 hours per week

Salary range: $33.00 per hour

Working Conditions: This is a hybrid role requiring onsite and remote participation; some installation, lifting and moving required

Location: This position is based in the City of Toronto
