Chinatown, The Best!

Chinatown, The Best! (唐人街, 最好的) x No Vacancy x Whippersnapper Gallery by: Long Time No See Collective

January 15-February 28, 2022

“Tong Yan Gai, Jeui Ho!” (Chinatown, the best) series is composed of window and wall murals featuring elders from our community, created as part of an ongoing project, in which we share stories, envision & conjure our best Chinatown. Installations are up at several locations in Chinatown including:

Site Locations:
Former TD Bank, 413 Dundas St. W
Minh Ngoc, 325A Spadina
Saigon Optical 315C Spadina Avene
Saigon Video 315G Spadina Ave

For the project, “Chinatown, the best!”, we ask seniors in the Chinatown area to envision what would make Chinatown a great place to live, a place of communion. What kind of amenities, services, cultural events would they like to see? Spending time with seniors at community centres in weekly gatherings, we will learn more of who they are, what they need/desire, what they would like to share of their skills and experiences.

Workshops may include self defence, drumming to accompany the lion dance, theatre professionals facilitating drama exercises, seniors sharing stories or other cultural traditions such as how to cook cultural delicacies. Seniors participating with youth in cultural activities is a way for our community to begin to manifest our best Chinatown.

Later, we will also ask participating seniors to reflect on their best vision of themselves and invite them to be photographed. The resulting images will be exhibited in locations throughout Chinatown in time for Lunar New Year.

Stay tuned for site updates as the project grows here!
